William Southard

March 8, 1918 — January 6, 2011


Mr. William Henry, age 92, of Hueytown, passed away Thursday, January 6, 2011. He was born and raised in Philipsburg, PA and went to work with US Steel in Pittsburg, PA. He retired from US Steel in Fairfield, AL after over 40 years of service. He worked as an engine room mechanic on a tug boat on the Mississippi River during the WWII years. He was of the Presbyterian faith. He was a member of the Lions Club which implemented the incorporation of the City of Hueytown. He helped to organize and was as a volunteer fireman with the Hueytown volunteer fire department. He was active in the Boy Scout Troop 22 sponsored by North Highlands Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sara; six children; Beth Southard Doetsch (Jim), Leland, Bruce (Carolyn), Rhonda Southard Porter (Chuck), Pat (Gwen), and Bill (Elisa); four grandchildren, Jonathan, Matthew, William and Selina; three brothers, Arden, Jim, John; two sisters, Virginia Southard and Judy Reese; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 8, 2011 from 12:30p until 1:30p with a graveside service to follow at 1:30p in the Jefferson-Memorial Gardens, South. Pastor Jim Gunn will be officiating. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Greater Humane Society or the hospice SouthernCare in Hueytown.
