of Hoover, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2007, at the age of 85 in Alexander City. He was born in Syracuse NY and came to Alabama on a football scholarship with the University of Alabama. During WWII, he went through flight training at the Pensacola Naval Training Station and took his commission as a Marine pilot. Mr. Schmick served in the Pacific flying C-47's, PBY's and SBD Dauntless planes. He later went in the Army from which he retired. After his service career, he worked for Liberty National Life Insurance Co. as an agent for 17 years. He was a member of the Oakmont Presbyterian Church. He served as a deacon and taught Sunday School at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church. He was past president of the Crestwood Civic Club and was a Mason and Shriner. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Harwell Schmick; a son, John William Schmick (Vicki) of Warner Robbins, GA; a daughter, Jane Schmick Hogue of Birmingham; three grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Schmick, Sarah Katherine Dowling and Emily Hogue Barron (Brett); two great grandchildren, Blake Schmick and Katherine Dowling; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 31, 2007, from 5 until 7 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 1, 2007, at 2 PM in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Larry Turner officiating. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, East.
