age 73, of Hoover, passed away on January 5, 2007 after a valiant fight with pancreatic cancer. He was the son of Beulah and William Wright Powers, Sr. He was born in Omega, Georgia and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Powers attained the rank of Major in the United States Air Force, and he was a decorated KC135 pilot during the Vietnam War. He earned his navigator wings in Harlingen, Texas and did his pilot training in Lubbock, Texas. He concluded his military service with a term of service at Altus Air Force Base, Altus, Oklahoma. After retiring from the Air Force, he moved to Birmingham and began a second career as a safety officer for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. After a second retirement, he spent nine years as a safety consultant and inspector for Brasfield and Gore Contractors. Mr. Powers was an avid golfer and enjoyed his time around the card table. He was known as "Q. D." or "Quicky," by the members of Chase Lake Country Club. Funeral Services will be held at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home on January 8, 2007 at 10:00 with burial in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 on Sunday, January 7, 2007 at the funeral home. He was preceded in death by his by his sister Myrtle Hill of Macon, Georgia. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Tillie Gamez Powers; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Powers King (Danny) of Wicksburg, Alabama; his sons, William Joseph Powers, Sr. of Vestavia, Thomas Anthony Powers of Hoover, Robert Michael Powers (Clare) of Pensacola, Florida, and Lawrence Jonathan Powers (Brooke) of Bluff Park Alabama; his grandchildren, Joey Powers (April), Chris Powers, Michael Powers Thomley, Melissa Thomley, Rhett King, Mandy King, Levi Powers King, Beau Powers, Madison Lee, Dylan Lee , Noah Matthews, Katie Powers, Kahla Powers, and Erica Powers; his sisters, Katherine Silas and Bonnie Charleton, both of Jacksonville, Florida. The family would like to express its gratitude to Dr. Lisa Larson for her excellent care during Mr. Powers illness.
