Mr. William P. "Bill" Ivey, 98, of Birmingham, AL, passed away December 24, 2012. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 28, 2012, at Union United Methodist Church at Chelsea Park. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M., and his service will be held at 11:00 A. M. with burial at the National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Wilda L. Ivey; a son, William M. Ivey (Sylvia); daughter, Sandra McMahan (Philip); daughter, Kay Pevoto; grandchildren: Tanya Elizabeth Burns (Danny), Tara Lea Kennedy (Jason), Teresa Annette Lyons, Leah McMahan Hallmon, Lanae Melanie McMahan, Laura Maureen McMahan, and Kory Pevoto; great-granchildren: James Kennedy, Jonathan Kennedy, Lacey Lyons, William Lyons, and Kaylee Hallmon; sisters: Edna Gilley, Grace Smith (Tom), Nancy Estler, and Mary Mathis Thompson. He was predeceased by his parents Arthur Judson Ivey and Mary Emma Ivey, and three brothers: A. J. Ivey, Ed Ivey, and John Ivey; four sisters: Anne Pettus, Doris Taylor, Ila Clifton, and Sybil Rogers Drew, and numerous nieces and nephews on the Ivey side of the family, and Shirley Ann Womble Ryan, his niece on his wife’s side. Bill was a member of Union United Methodist Church at Chelsea Park, and he had also been a member of Ensley Highlands Methodist Church, where he was chairman of the Board of Stewards, sang in the choir, and taught a Sunday School class; at Martin Memorial Methodist he also taught a Sunday School class and sang in the choir. Bill was a WWII veteran, having served as a ship’s captain in the United States Merchant Marines. For a brief time, he was an honorary commodore of more than 60 ships carrying block-busters for the war effort. In addition, he was a graduate of LaSalle Extension University Law School. He also was in the furniture business in Birmingham and was an active member of the Republican Party, having run for Congress during the Nixon years. Grateful appreciation is extended to Union Church and its members who have ministered to Bill for so many years.
