“Huge Footprints”
William H. Coggins, Jr., 85, in recent times resident in Tampa, Florida, formerly of Dothan, Birmingham and elsewhere, passed away June 6, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents William H. Coggins, Sr. and Lucille S. Coggins, and his sister Joyce Shields. Mr. Coggins was an adored husband, son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend to many.
Mr. Coggins was a Phillips High School graduate and attended Auburn University and North Carolina State University. He had been a member of Inglenook Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, along with Cocoa Presbyterian Church in Cocoa, Florida.
Coggins’ professional career concluded with 3 decades of engineering work within the nuclear power industry. This was preceded by his work within the aerospace industry, the most noteworthy being his many contributions on all of NASA’s Apollo missions.
Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home is coordinating funeral arrangements. Visitation will occur Friday, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm CT June 21, 2024, at Currie-Jefferson. A celebration of Mr. Coggins’ life will take place at 11:00 the following day.
Survivors include wife Raba, son Bill and daughter-in-law Maria, grandchildren Adam and Marabelle and great grandchild Willow, all of Tampa, along with many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Coggins was a long-time member of the Houston County (AL) Republican Executive Committee. He was also deeply involved with the local (Dothan) Alzheimer’s support group for many years. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to either your local Alzheimer’s support organization or Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham, 1901 14th Ave. South, Birmingham, AL 35205.
