Virginia Hood Wilson, of Hoover, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at the age of 91. She was a native of Decatur, GA, where she graduated from Decatur Girls High School and then from Georgia State College for Women. She taught high school in the Atlanta, GA public school system for 5 years. She was also a school librarian in the Jackson, MS public school system for 7 years. After moving to Alabama in 1978, she worked in several Jefferson County public libraries, and for the last 10 years of her career she was the Library Director for the Bessemer Public Library. She was married in 1948 to Edwin Riley Wilson for 45 years. They started first grade together. They moved from Georgia to Jacksonville, AL to begin their lives as the preacher and the preacher's wife, a role she very much enjoyed. From Jacksonville, they moved to Baton Rouge, LA, then to Corinth, MS and Jackson, MS, and finally to Birmingham, AL. She was a member of the Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress, and quilter, being a member of the Birmingham Quilters Guild.
Mrs. Wilson is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Riley Wilson and her parents, Ruby Mitchell Hood and Festus H. Hood. She is survived by her daughter, Madelyn M. Wilson of Hoover, AL; and her son, Peter H. Wilson of Ridgeland, MS.
The family will receive friends from 1-2, Monday, January 22, 2018, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150 in Hoover. Service will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South. The family wishes to thank Kindred Hospice Care, Home Instead Senior Care, and a special thanks to her caregiver, Ms. Rowena Rhodes.
