Ted M. Cost passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, January 17, 2025, just days after his 97th birthday. Born in Tarrant, Alabama on January 8, 1928, he was a graduate of Calera High School, and a 1962 graduate of the University of Alabama.
Ted married Billie Strickland, the love of his life, in 1954. After serving in the Marine Corps for 11 years the couple settled in Birmingham where Ted began a 20+ year career with Thomas Foundries, retiring as Treasurer.
Ted will be remembered as a devoted caregiver to Billie for over 30 years following her debilitating stroke. When he later became disabled, he maintained his zest for life, enjoying Alabama football, politics, family and friends, despite the hardships. His sharp mind and wit kept us all on our toes. He always demonstrated those characteristics we associate with The Greatest Generation, perseverance in the face of adversity, integrity and devotion to family and dear friends. We are forever grateful for the dedicated service of his caretaker of over 15 years, Cici Chebet. She has been a gift from God.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edgar C. Cost and Margaret K. Cost; his sisters, Alice Crawford (Booty), Willodean Freeman (John) and Lurla Harris (Jack); and his brothers, Paul Cost (Bobbie), Ed Cost (Peggy) and Larry Cost; his nieces Catherine Crawford Walls and Tina Cost. He is survived by his nieces and nephews who loved him dearly, Paul Cost Jr. (Madeline) Paula Cost Manley, Vicki Freeman, Joni Freeman Blakney (John) and Teresa Cost Metcalf, Johnny Harris (Mike) and Donna Harris Vaughn (Michael).
The family will receive friends from 1 pm - 2 pm, Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150 in Hoover. A chapel service at 2 pm will be followed by military honors at the graveside in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South.
