Steven Gregg Dickson passed away on Friday, September 23, 2016. He was born September 13, 1942 in Greencastle, Indiana. He was the only child of Audrey and Wilhelmina (Nelson) Dickson, and grew up in Indianapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Steve graduated from Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis in 1960. He was employed by the IBM Corporation card plant in Greencastle in January 1961 where he worked at various card production machines. In 1965 he was promoted into the plant Order Entry office and Special Pricing area. In 1969 he transferred to an Order Entry position in the IBM branch office in Tampa, Florida. He was promoted to the Administration Office Manager position in 1974 in the Birmingham branch office.
While in Birmingham he was promoted to Administration Manager in the General Systems Division in 1976. He was promoted to the Data Processing Division Landlord Administration Manager position in 1981 and was responsible for the Birmingham, Huntsville, and Montgomery branch offices. In 1983 Steve was promoted to the User Registration and Telecommunications Manager for the IBM Information Network in Tampa, Florida.
During his career Steve worked for six different divisions of IBM. He earned numerous IBM Suggestion Awards, Outstanding Management Awards from the Data Processing, General Systems, and National Accounts Divisions, and the IBM Information Network. IBM's tuition refund program enabled him to earn an Associate of Arts degree in 1973 from the Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Government from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Steve retired in November 1991 from the Division Administration Manager position in the Information Network in Tampa with over 30 years service with IBM.
After retirement Steve moved to Tuscaloosa to attend the University of Alabama to work on his Masters degree in Education and earned a teaching certificate from the State of Alabama. He graduated in 1993 summa cum laude with a Master's Degree in Secondary Education. He was named the Outstanding Graduate Student from the University of Alabama School of Education for Secondary Education. He was also inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society for Education.
Steve was hired by the Jefferson County School System in 1994 to teach Social Studies at Hueytown High School. He was also an assistant football coach, and later the Head Golf Coach. He retired from teaching and coaching in 1994.
Steve enjoyed sports and coaching. He coached his daughters' softball teams for over six years in the Dixie Youth Softball program in Vestavia. He was a high school football official in Pinellas County, Florida, for five years, and was an avid Alabama football fan and Atlanta Braves baseball fan. He often joked about the unique experience of playing, officiating, coaching, and taking tickets for high school football games.
Steve married Shirley (Fomby) in March 1993. Upon retirement they traveled, cruising in the Caribbean Islands, Central America, and throughout Europe., including trips in the Baltic Sea and Russia, the Middle East and Egypt. He was also an avid golfer, enjoyed reading and gardening, and his daughters and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife Shirley, he is survived by his three daughters: Trisha White (Scott), Lisa Sweeney (Bill), and Paula Lambeth (Bill); his five grandchildren: Mary Katherine and Courtney Sweeney, Hunter and Taylor White, and Parker Lambeth; plus his two dogs, Bonnie and Molly.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Tuesday, September 27, 2016, and from 1-2 PM, Wednesday, September 28, 2016, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150 in Hoover. Funeral will follow at 2 PM, Wednesday, in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South.
