Shirley Martin Byrd

Shirley Martin Byrd of Birmingham, beloved Mother, Grandmother, and cherished friend, died peacefully on May 11, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Shirley was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 4, 1939, to the late Charles Allen Martin and Cora Elizabeth Martin (Darnell). She is survived by her children Karen Byrd Kasuba (David)and Gregory Martin Byrd (Regina), grandson Andrew Kasuba, and a host of family and friends.

She worked for many years at the Children's Hospital of Alabama, coordinating volunteer services and later successfully raising funds for the Children's Hospital of Alabama Foundation. She was integral in launching the Festival of Trees and the Children's Miracle Network Telethon. She also spent many hours traveling the state of Alabama, speaking to many civic organizations on behalf of the Children's Hospital of Alabama.

As a cancer survivor, Shirley was a champion of cancer research, especially breast cancer awareness, and volunteered at many Race for the Cure events in support of that cause. Her ability to counsel, advocate, and comfort others facing the same cancer diagnosis was remarkable.

A funeral service is planned for Friday, May 31, 2024, at the Cathedral Church of Advent. The family will receive visitors at 10:00 a.m., with the service at 11:00 a.m. and the interment of ashes immediately following.
