Mrs. Sara Young Mullins, age 92, of Helena, Alabama, died on April 15, 2012. She is survived by three children, David Mullins (Jacqueline) of Johnson City, TN; Laurita Mullins Miller ( David) of Pelham; Leanne Mullins Sharp (Michael) of Atlanta; seven grandchildren, Julie Mullins Stauss of Nashville, TN; David Miller, Jr. of Pelham; Brooke Mullins Bowers of Elizabethton, TN; Sara Leah Miller Pihakis of Cincinnati, OH; Bethany Sharp Edmond of Knoxville, TN; Britanny Sharp and Brandon Sharp of Atlanta; three great-granddaughters, Taylar and Holly Stauss of Nashville and Emma Grace Edmond of Knoxville; one sister, Laura Young Monroe of Fort Walton Beach, FL and one brother, George Young of Pensacola, FL. She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years Rev. Charles David Mullins and her parents, Brooks and Nannie Bonham Young. Sara was born in Birmingham, Alabama on July 20, 1919, where she graduated from Woodlawn High School. She was a graduate of Howard College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Prior to missionary appointment, she and her husband served two Alabama Baptist churches (West Highland Baptist Church in Andalusia and Sixty-Sixth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham). In 1955 she and Charles were appointed by the International Mission Board (Southern Baptist Convention) where they served as missionaries in Kahului, Maui and Waianae, Oahu in Hawaii for 23 years and in Macao, East Asia for five years. During their missionary service, she taught English as a Second Language to students from over seventeen different countries. Upon retirement in 1982, they returned to Birmingham, where they were members of Ruhama Baptist Church where she was actively involved as Sunday School teacher and a leader in Baptist Women for many years. She assisted her husband in ministry to Vietnamese residents and to the Vietnamese congregation of the Woodlawn Baptist Church as well. In 1990, she and Charles moved back to his hometown of Helena, AL where she was a faithful member of First Baptist Church. During her many years of Christian ministry, she served as church pianist, organist, choir director, Sunday School teacher, and Woman's Missionary Union Director. She enjoyed quilting and sewing for members of her family. She also used her gift of hospitality to minister to new acquaintances, church members, ministry colleagues, friends and family. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 16, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, 2701 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover, Alabama. A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Helena. Burial will follow in Helena City Cemetery. Dr. Mark DeVine and Rev. Greg Walker will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for World Missions through the First Baptist Church of Helena.
