After fighting a long and courageous battle with cancer, Sandra Kay Rittenberry McKenzie, went home to be with her Heavenly Father on September 9, 2016, at the age of 60. Sandra was a resident of the Ross Bridge community in Hoover and a member of the Church at Ross Bridge. She dearly loved her church family, especially the members if the Genesis Sunday School Class. Sandra was born on January 25, 1956, in Tuscaloosa, to the late Frank A. Rittenberry and Elizabeth L. Rittenberry. Her older brother, Gary, also precedes her in death. She was a proud graduate of the Tuscaloosa High School Black Bears. She attended Livingston University and graduated with a B.S. degree in Business. While attending Livingston, she met and later married her husband of 39 plus years, Kevin. A few years later, Sandra and Kevin were blessed with the arrival of their son, Kevin Heath (Crystal and granddaughter Mallory).
Sandra leaves behind many loving family members including sisters, Sheila Hocutt-Remington (Craig) and Sally Tucker (Lee) and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews and great nieces and Nephews. Sandra also leaves behind a large number of precious friends made along life's way the many corporate relocations that Sandra and her family made over the years. After one of their corporate moves to the Atlanta, Georgia area, Sandra was able to fulfill a lifelong dream and earned her associates degree in nursing, becoming a registered nurse. She worked in hospitals for a number of years before having the opportunity to become to manager of the Mercy Medical Hospital office in Mobile. Quickly realizing that she had found her true calling in life, Sandra went on to enjoy a successful and personally satisfying, 19-year career in hospice nursing. She later founded and led Affinity Home Hospice Services in Birmingham for 10 years. Sandra had an enormous passion for providing exceptional end-of-life care and her company developed a superior reputation for delivering compassionate and exceptional hospice care. Serving others at their often most significant time of need was Sandra's passion and she did it at a very high level for a long time. Sandra was a strong woman but so compassionate and loving, and always ready to help others without conditions.
Sandra's life will be celebrated with a memorial service to be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2016 at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home located in Hoover at 2701 John Hawkins Parkway.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to the building fund of the Church at Ross Bridge, 2201 Grand Avenue, Suite 117, Hoover, AL 35226
