He was also blessed to have 4 grandchildren Lane and Maxwell Poynter, Anna and Reid Crawford and 2 step-grandchildren Brendan and Erin Johnson.
Sam was born and raised in Petersville, KY. He began a career with R.R. Dawson Bridge Company in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961-1964. Then returned to work with Dawson which brought Sam and Ruth to Birmingham in 1966 where they established roots and started a family. His strong work ethic and commitment to the company led to him becoming the Area Administrator of the Gulf Coast Division until his retirement February 2017.
Sam was happiest while spending time with family. Summers at his lake house on Lay Lake are cherished by all. He enjoyed fishing, grilling out and pulling grandkids behind boats. He was also a very passionate fan of Kentucky basketball. He enjoyed traveling and was always happy when Ruth said she had booked a trip. He was a member of Petersville Christian Church and attended St. Mark United Methodist Church in Vestavia.
The family will receive friends from 12-1 PM, Monday, February 5, 2018, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 1 PM in the chapel with Rev. Don Cross officiating.
