SHIRLEY, RUTH MAXINE, of Birmingam and Oneonta, passed away on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at the age of 89. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hoover and the Harvesters Sunday School class. In addition to being an excellent homemaker and loving mother, Ruth also was an Avon representative in Shelby County for more than 20 years, winning numerous awards. She was a very generous and giving person, always putting others first. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 70 years, J.R. Shirley, and great granddaughter, Ashley Agee Bell. She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Burchfield (George) of McCalla, Gail Bailey (Wayne) of Oneonta, and Joan Shirley Thrift of Mt. Olive; son, James Edward Shirley of Cahaba Heights; nine grandchildren, Vickie Burchfield Agee (Randall) of Pelham, Van Burchfield (Teresa) of Woodstock, Vince Burchfield (Lisa) of Orange Beach, Von Burchfield (Leah) of Bessemer, Vernon Burchfield (Ashley) of Columbus, OH, Verick Burchfield (Crystal) of Kansas City, MO, Cindy Bailey Ritchie (Mark) of North Shelby County, Candi Thrift Leo (Michael) of Mt. Olive, and Jordan Shirley of Pelham; nineteen great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and one sister, Margie Cobb of Jemison. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Monday, ,October 6, 2008, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Highway 150, Hoover. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Dr. Randy Atkinson and Dr. Earl Tew officiating. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South.
