Ruth Carpenter of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on November 15, 2023, after a lengthy illness at the age of 102.
Ruth was born on September 26, 1921, in Denver, Colorado. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James Dale Carpenter and Anne Carpenter; granddaughter and husband, Alecia Gardner, Edwin Gardner and children, William and Grace; granddaughter and husband, Anna Bates, Greg Bates and children, Hunter, Drew and Weathers.
Ruth was a veteran of World War II as a Lieutenant, U.S. Navy Nurses Corp. She was stationed, shortly after liberation of Guam, at the Naval Hospital during fighting at Tinian, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
After the war, she resided in Birmingham, Alabama working at University Hospital as a surgical nurse and instructor for UAB School of Nursing from 1949 to 1959. Ruth accepted the position of the clinic head nurse for Lloyd Noland Hospital, OBGYN Clinic, from 1959 to retirement in 1984.
A graveside service, with military honors, will be at Jefferson Memorial Gardens South, 2701 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover, Alabama, 35244, on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, at 11 a.m., Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home directing. In lieu of flowers, please consider remembrance in Ruth’s name, a gift to Southerncare New Beacon Hospice, 1280 Columbiana Road, #110, Birmingham, Alabama 35216 for the love and care given by a wonderful staff and staff at SouthHaven Health and Rehab.
