Roy M. and Elaine Bobo Harcourt of Powder Springs, GA, passed away within a week of one another after being married for 74 years. Roy passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at the age of 98 and Elaine passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at the age of 95. Roy was born in Atlanta, GA and moved to Dalton, GA upon the death of his father at the age of 10. He graduated from the University of GA and served in WWII as a Captain and Company Commander in the campaign of Sai Pan and Okinawa. He was a member of the Japan Occupation Force. After the war he worked for and retired from Southern Railroad as an Executive with 44 years service. He spent his remaining time improving and maintaining the family farm near Powder Springs, GA. He was a devoted husband to Elaine and loving father to his children and grandchildren.
Elaine Bobo Harcourt graduated from Wood Lawn High School in 1936 and subsequently moved to Atlanta, GA, where she met and married Roy in 1940. She sent him off to war in 1942 along with one brother and three brothers-in-law. She later would send her two sons to the US Marine Corp and another war. Elaine worked as a volunteer the rest of her life. She was President of the South Cobb PTA for two years, twice president of the Powder Springs Garden Club, served twenty seven years as Secretary of the Cobb County Cancer Society, and most importantly she taught a girls teenage Sunday School class at Powder Springs United Methodist Church for three years.
Roy and Elaine achieved the American Dream. Both lost their father at an early age, but both worked together to achieve a loving family and successful life. They are American heroes. They passed holding hands and are now beginning their next great adventure.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Handley and Ruby Harcourt, and three brothers.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, John and Essie Bobo, three sisters and one brother.
They are survived by their sons, David Harcourt (Cynthia) and Phillip Harcourt (Ann), three grandchildren, Stephanie, Russell, and Laine, and six great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Saturday, November 1, 2014, at 3 PM at Powder Springs United Methodist Church.
The Harcourt family would like to extend special thanks to Marie Ferrier, their caregiver for the past eight years for loyalty and love given them.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cobb County American Cancer Society or Powder Springs United Methodist Church.
