1917-2007, departed this life on December 20 at home, surrounded by family. He was a member of Bluff Park United Methodist Church since 1927; a former Mason; and his college career at Birmingham-Southern College was interrupted by World War II, where he served in the United States Navy on the USS Shannon mine destroyer from 1942-1945. Mr. Tyler was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Garnette Cox Tyler; parents, Joe and Florence Tyler; stepmother, Jeannie Mays Tyler; brothers, James and Charlie Tyler; and sisters, Gladys Jackson, Virginia Tyler, Alice Barnes and Margaret Beasley. He is survived by two daughters, Sandra (Harold) Ridgeway and Barbara Dea Hill; five grandchildren, Susan (Mike) Bartlett, Shannon (Russell) Lamoureux, Sandi Lynn Ridgeway, Michael (Ashley) Hill, all of Birmingham, and Kelly Scott (Larisa Pedroncelli) Hill of San Francisco, CA; five great-grandchildren, Melinda and Christopher Bartlett, Russ and Emma Grace Lamoureux, and Hudson Tyler Hill; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Tyler worked at Birmingham Dairy Supply and owned his own hardware store in Bluff Park, then Little Hardware, and finally at Huffstutler's Hardware in Homewood for 43 years, where he received a special award from the City of Homewood on his 90th birthday, February 14, 2007. He enjoyed all his customers, and also enjoyed fishing and Alabama football. Special thanks to longtime caregiver, Micheline Peer, Amedisys Hospice Care (especially Lauren, Carolyn, Sue and Lakesha), and several other sitters. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Bluff Park United Methodist Church, 733 Valley St., Hoover, AL 35226. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 23, 2007, from 1-2 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150 (2701 John Hawkins Pkwy), Hoover.
