age 81, passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at his home. He was born in Kansas City, MO to John Joseph Schaffhausen and Lorna Hahn Schaffhausen, who preceded him in death. Bob was a graduate of the Univ. of Missouri, Columbia, MO (Civil Engineering) and received his masters degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He came to Birmingham with Butler Manufacturing Company around 1949 and retired in 1991 from Southern Building Code Congress. Through the years, he worked with several firms as a civil engineer. (He was a member of the ASCE and NSPE Engineering Societies and an active member of the Hoover Rotary Club where he received several awards.) Bob was a longtime member of Mtn. Chapel United Methodist Church where he was a faithful member of the Chancel Choir, a Sunday School teacher and youth counselor. He served on the Administrative Board in various capacities over many years. He was blessed with a great sense of humor, and his family and friends adored him. He was a member of the Emmaus Community and volunteered for many years with Prison Fellowship, receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award from Chuck Colson in 1989. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bette Truskett Schaffhausen, two daughters, Carol Schaffhausen of Homewood, AL and Cynthia J. Hastings (Joe) of Oneonta, AL; three grandchildren, Mitchell Hastings (UA Law School), John Carl Hastings of Auburn University, AL and Meredith K. Hastings of Oneonta; a sister, Irene Albertson of Huntsville, TX; and several beloved in-laws. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 12, 2008, from 10-11 AM at Mtn. Chapel United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 11 AM at the church, with the Rev. Joe Elmore, the Rev. Tom Parrish and the Rev. Joey Elmore officiating. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South The family wishes to thank Odyssey Hospice and caregivers; Brenda, Nina, Annie and Deborah for the loving care he received. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mtn. Chapel UMC.
