Robert "Bob" Newton Evans Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on September 7, 1940, in Montgomery, Alabama, Bob spent the majority of his life in Birmingham, Alabama, where he became known for his deep love for family and the great outdoors.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Newton Alexander Evans and Verna Sue Evans. He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 63 years, Patsy A. Evans; his two sons, Robert N. Evans Jr. and wife Linda and Rev. Patrick M. Evans; three cherished grandchildren, Courtney E. Evans, Morgan L. Saucier and her husband David, and Robert N. Evans III; and one beloved great-grandchild, Gabriel S. Saucier.
A career as a men's apparel buyer allowed Bob to combine his sharp sense of style with his passion for the latest trends. He worked for the Pizitz department store chain and later for Rodgers Department Store in Florence, before finally finding his niche at Rogers Trading Company in Birmingham. Bob took great pleasure in selecting outdoor apparel for his customers, reflecting his own love for nature and adventure.
Bob's true joy, however, was in traveling and exploring the beauty of the natural world. Whether taking in the breathtaking views of Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, and the Badlands, or immersing himself in the history of places from the 1800s, Bob's love for travel was a constant source of happiness. He especially treasured the many camping trips to Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains, always with Patsy by his side, sharing every mile of the journey.
Family was the cornerstone of Bob's life. He had a special kindness and wisdom that drew people to him, and he always took a deep interest in the lives of his two sons. Bob was also a natural storyteller, often sharing tales from his time in the Air Force as a Cold War veteran, his experiences at Stark Military Academy, or weekends spent at his cabin on Lake Jordan. These stories, filled with humor and insight, will be remembered by all who knew him.
Bob's legacy is one of love, adventure, and a life well-lived. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
