Mr. Richard “Dick” A. Umstead, Sr., 96, of Hoover, AL passed away on November 30, 2021. He was born in Chelsea, Michigan on February 13, 1925. He was a farmer, cattle truck driver, Radioman in the Army Airforce during WWII, TV Repairman, Computer Systems Analyst, and Owner/Operator of Dino’s Hotdogs in Woodlawn, AL. Dick volunteered for WWII at the age of 17 before finishing high school (he lied about his age). He was married to Barbara for 61 years and has lived in Chelsea, MI, Ypsilanti, MI, Ashville, NC, and Birmingham, AL.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara Griffin Umstead; parents, Alvin Umstead and Blossom Currier Umstead; and brother, Donald Umstead.
He is survived by his son, Richard A. Umstead, Jr. (Cynthia Hooks Umstead); daughter, Kimberly Umstead Williams (Ray Williams); grandchildren, Andrew, Alexandria, Savannah, Richard III, and Morgan; great-grandchildren, Emmaline, Adelaide, and Davey; sisters, Marjorie Umstead Burnett and Joyce Umstead Friesinger (Bud); and nieces and nephews, Shelly of TX, Chris of MI, Curtiss James of MI, and Annette of FL.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover, AL with the funeral service at 2:00pm. Interment will immediately follow in the adjoining cemetery at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South.
