Wimpy Winther's Obituary
Richard "Wimpy" Lew Winther, age 76, passed away Wednesday night on June 26, 2024. A memorial service is scheduled for 2pm on Monday July 1, 2024 at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens. A viewing followed by a service will be led by friends and family.
He was born in Charles City, Iowa and moved to Biloxi, Mississippi to pursue his football career. He attended the University of Mississippi to be a center on the football team alongside Archie Manning. From there, he was drafted into the National Football League (NFL) in 1971 by the New Orleans Saints. He was then transferred to Green Bay Packers and the following season went back to finish his NFL career with the Saints, again. He eventually settled in Alabama where he coached at Shelby County High School then moved to Rudd Middle School in Pinson where he retired from his teaching and coaching profession. Truly, Wimpy was a loving, caring dad; a fun, loyal friend; an amazing coach; and even decent in lawn care services. He will be missed by many, but remembered by so many more.
Wimpy is survived by his loving, devoted wife, Sandra; his son and daughter-in-law Matthew and Tracey Winther; his daughter and son-in-law Ashley Kay and Derek Padgett; and his daughter and daughter-in-law Abby and Ashley Winther; his grandchildren Zachary, Joshua, Maicyn, and Josie; his siblings Lao Wach, Teresa Soteros, and Dave Winther.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Lucile E. Stille Winther Cummins; his father, Jens C. Winther; his brother, James "Jamie" or "Jim" Winther; his son, Todd Winther; brother-in-law, Joseph "Joe" Soteros; nephews, Tony Winther, Joe Winther, and Kyle Cummins.
The immediate family would like to express our most sincere gratitude and love to every family member and friend who has helped us in our times of need, as well as, help make the best memories for us all to remember.
