of Hoover, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2005, at the age of 57. He was born in Rome, Ga and grew up in Jacksonville, FL. and was graduate from the University of West Florida in Pensacola. He was a USAF veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Mathis moved to Birmingham in 1975 where he graduated from UAB. He was a professional engineer for Altec Industries for the past 25 years. He was active with the Boy Scout Troop 21 and a member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Mathis was an avid lover of the outdoors. He was a loving husband, father, and son. He was preceded in death by his father, Woodrow W. Mathis. He is survived by his wife, Judy Mathis, of Hoover; a son, Charles "Woody" Mathis, of Hoover; a daughter, Ruth E. Mathis; mother, Carrie "Bebe" Mathis, of Middleburg, FL; two sisters, Susan Smith (David), of Middleburg, FL and Sandra Patterson (Edward), of Jacksonville, FL; several nieces and nephews, other loving family and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at 3:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church at Bessemer with Dr. Gary Fenton, Rev. Dewey Mayfield and Dr. Neil Schooley officiating. Mr. Mathis will lie in state from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in Moore Cemetery in McCalla.
