Randle Jackson "Jack" Nelems, 83, of Bluff Park, passed peacefully, Wednesday, August 5, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Jack was the last surviving of the Nelems triplets, the first set of triplets born at Carraway Hospital on August 25, 1931 to H. C. And Clyde Nelems. Raised in Pratt City, Jack attended Pratt School and Ensley High School. Jack joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served with the 1st Marine Corps Division, 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Corps Regiment in the Korean War. His unit was involved in the Chosin Reservoir Campaign and received a Presidential Unit Citation. Jack received an honorable discharge from the Corps and attained the rank of Corporal. After returning from Korea, Jack began working at U. S. Steel, Fairfield Works in the Engineering Department as a mechanical draftsman where he would retire after 32 years.
Jack is preceded in death by his triplet brother Jerry Nelems, his triplet sister Jane Nelems Grissom, his older brother Henry Nelems, and his nephew Richard "Dick" Grissom. Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Marian Howard Nelems, daughter Kathy Nelems Marino, grandson David (Jennifer) Marino, granddaughter Christine (David) Soria, and 7 great-grandchildren: Brianna, Alexis, Brett, Brendan, Daniel, Melody, Isaac, and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM, Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150 in Hoover. Graveside service will follow at 2:00 PM in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South, officiated by Rev. Drew Ramsay. Special thanks to Dr. Lawrence Lee, Shaney, and all of the staff of Lee Internal Medicine. Also special thanks to the doctors and nursing staff that cared for Jack at St Vincent's Hospital and the Bluff Park Fire Department.
