Peter W. Weston, 90, died February 8, 2023. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, he was raised in Dayton, Ohio. He attended the State College of Washington where he was student body president and a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He degreed in Forestry and Education and was a member of the ROTC. After graduation he married Jo Ann Worman and moved to Ft. Benning Georgia where he began his military career with a commission in the Army Reserve, 1st Lt. After his service he began his career in higher education, obtaining his master’s and Doctorate in Education at Indiana University in Bloomington. After graduating he and Jo Ann moved with their new son Timothy to Buffalo N.Y where he was employed in the Development office of the SUNY Buffalo campus. Here they had their second son, Daniel. He then served at several universities - in Cleveland, at Muskingum College in New Concord OH, eventually settling at Samford University in Birmingham, AL in 1970. Coincident with his career, he was active in politics early in life, campaigning for Nixon and Reagan in their congressional and presidential runs. After a few good years at Samford, he took a new position as president of a local bank in Birmingham. In 1973 Peter started his own Financial Planning business, WESBAN, in-response to the growing need for fiduciary advice in the area and obtained the first licensed Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation in the state of Alabama. Peter and Jo Ann were active in local service organizations, church, and civic groups. Peter led and was active in the Downtown Kiwanis club for over 40 years. He regularly attended men’s breakfast meetings, led Sunday School classes, and assisted charitable and service groups where he could lend his advice and stress philanthropy for those less fortunate in the community. Growing in his faith and church were becoming the focal point in later years. When the Briarwood church was young and outgrew its original facilities in Rocky Ridge, Peter helped with the campaign to build and form the current main campus. Home life was central to Peter’s life, and he was continually hosting bible studies, gardening in the back yard, or scheduling vacations and excursions with family and friends from Maine to Montana. House boating was a staple in the B’ham days, always with friends and family. Peter loved to study the scriptures and shared his theology with all who would listen. His communication skills and his faith kept him involved in evangelism and caring for his fellow-man. Peter is survived by his wife Jo Ann Weston, their two sons and their spouses, Timothy and Rosamma Weston, Daniel and Susan Weston; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
