Oliver Norton

Oliver Wetzel Norton, age 90 of Hoover, Alabama, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 11, 2018 surrounded by his family. Born September 10, 1928 in Albertville, AL.
Upon his graduation from Albertville High School in 1946, Oliver joined the Navy. While serving in the Navy, he married his high school sweetheart,Inez Hill while home on leave on Christmas Eve in 1946. After serving, he attended Snead Junior College and then the University of Alabama where he graduated with a degree in business in 1952. He went to work for Southern Bell Corporation where he retired in 1989 after 37 years. Oliver was very civic minded and involved in several organiza- tions including the Birmingham Civitan Club, Telephone Pioneers of Alabama, Dixie Youth Baseball, and was the first president and a founding member of the Hoover Athletic Association.
He was an active member of Lakeside Baptist Church for 58 years where he served as president of the Fifty Plus Club and was a member of the Adult Choir and in the later years the New Life Singers. Oliver loved gospel music and great hymns of faith. Oliver was predeceased by his parents Oliver Street and Bernice Frachiseur Norton and his brothers Jack and Gene Norton. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 72 years, Inez Norton, who has been faithful to demonstrate her vow of “in sickness and in health til death do us part”. He is also survived by his children, Phyllis DePiano (Neal), Keith Norton (Connie) and Janice Ritter (Allen). His pride and joy were his six grandchildren and his four great grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Grandview Medical Center for their extraordinary care and espe- cially Lori, Hannah, Sydney, and Andrea. We also wish to thank the Hoover Fire Department for all of the dedicated services through the years to Oliver and Inez.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, October 15, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Lakeside Baptist Church. Visitation will pre- cede the service beginning
at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to your favorite charity in Oliver’s memory.
