Mr. Neal Joseph Broerman was born in Dallas TX, June 10, 1938, and died, December 3, 2013, in Birmingham, AL. Neal lived in New York before moving to Evansville at a very young age. He went to Memorial High School, was an Eagle Scout, order of the Arrow, graduated University of Louisville, B.S. in Physics, member Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and served on the USS Sarsfield until mid-sixties when he went to for work with the telephone company. He was on loan to AT &T in Basking Ridge, NJ during divestiture. He transferred to Birmingham, AL in 1985, retired from Bell South in 1992 and was considered the “silent Co-Regional Advisor” in the founding of the Southern Breeze region of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, supporting fully his wife’s writing career. Much loved by her critique group, the Leaky Pens. Mr. Broerman was a member of Discovery United Methodist Church, attended Alabama Emmaus and was an early and active team builder for the Birmingham Emmaus community.
He was the oldest of five children and is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Frances Broerman.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Lee Williams Broerman, five daughters; Wendolyn Harris (Scott), Birmingham, AL, Cynthia Hester (Bob), Franklin, TN, Carolyn Biggs , Louisville, KY, Natassia Xsavier Ling (Greg), Glen Gardner, N J, and Shelley Biggs, Birmingham, AL, two sons; David Biggs, Ojo Caliente, NM, and Steven Biggs, Birmingham, AL, two sisters; Pam Gard, Evansville IN, and Susan Grimm (Brad), Sammamish, WA, two brothers; Mike Broerman (Judy), Evansville, IN and Rick Broerman (Lyn) Evansville, IN; seven grandchildren; Nick Harris, Kelsey Harris, Shelby Harris, Joshua Harris (Stephanie), Brittany Burks (Travis), Dylan Hester, and Noah Hester; six great grandchildren; Leo Harris, Nora Harris, Will Harris, Carson Burks, Trent Burks, and Bella Burks; seven nieces and nephews; Jane Gard, Jill Gard, Heather Broerman, Holli Broerman, Andy Broerman, Lewis Broerman, and Ashley Broerman, and eight great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday, December 6, 2013, from 6-8 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Saturday, December 7, 2013, at 11 AM at Discovery United Methodist Church with Dr. Charles Alexander and Rev. Cheryl Blankenship officiating. Interment will be Monday, December 9, 2013, at 1:15 PM at Alabama National Cemetery.
