Monnie Elizabeth Harris, 97-years-old, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, after succumbing to a brief illness. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends and her unwavering faith in God, independent spirit and concern for others were in full evidence until her passing.
Elizabeth was born on July 28, 1920 in Magness, Arkansas to Thomas and Monnie Waldrip. She was the youngest of two with her older brother Byron currently residing in Kingston, TN.
Elizabeth received a two year degree in mathematics and was employed as a teacher until joining the war effort in 1942 where she moved to Birmingham and served as an Army Aircraft Inspector until the end of the war. It was here that she met her husband and love of her life, James (Jim) Harris. The couple married on March 31, 1946 and resided in the Birmingham area for most of their lives while raising four boys. Elizabeth’s passion was her love for God, her family and church family. She spent the remainder of her life as a loving wife, mother, sister, and homemaker and faithful member of the Pine Lane Church of Christ.
Known for her contagious Christ-filled spirit, Elizabeth had a positive impact on the lives of everyone she met. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of all who had the privilege to know her. Her signature gift of joy for the Lord and unconditional love for her family and church family, will always be remembered and cherished.
Elizabeth is survived by three sons, Timothy Harris of Montgomery, Roger Harris of Birmingham, and Patrick (Jana) Harris of Huntsville; five grandchildren, Neal Harris, Buddy Harris, Matt Harris, Lane Harris and Patrick Harris; one brother, Byron Waldrip of Kingston, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband; James Nealy Harris; her son, Jim Jr.; and daughter in law; Donna Harris.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation and service Saturday September 23rd at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home at 2701 John Hawkins Parkway Hoover, AL 35244. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM to 2:00PM with the services beginning at 2:00 PM. A brief graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery at 3:30 PM.
