Michael McCarthy, of Bessemer, passed away on June 8, 2010, at the age of 81. He graduated from St. Michael's High School in Brooklyn, NY and from Villanova University in Philadelphia, PA in 1950 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. He served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954 as an Intelligence Specialist. Upon return to civilian life, Mr. McCarthy went to work for Universal Atlas Cement Company until his retirement in 1985. He then worked for Eastern Cement Company in Florida as Vice President of Quality Control until 2004. He has been a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church since his return to Birmingham in 2004. He was an avid sports fan who loved the New York Yankees, Notre Dame football, and Villanova basketball. He also loved to travel with his wife, especially to Ireland and Cape Cod. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Maureen A. McCarthy; 7 children, Eileen Hinkin (Dan) of Manhatten, KS; Michael McCarthy (Vicky) of Hoover; Mary Carr (Freddy) of Destin, FL; Brian McCarthy (Caroline) of Mobile; Patrick McCarthy (Stephie) of Harpers Ferry, WV; Kevin McCarthy (Teresa) of Atlanta, GA; and Terry McCarthy of Birmingham; 15 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 10, 2010, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Father John Fallon will offer the Funeral Mass at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Catholic Charities.
