Michael Daniels

Mike Daniels, age 75, of Birmingham claimed victory in Jesus as he passed into glory and into the arms of his Lord and Savior on March 16.

Predeceased by his wife, Julia (Cargile Moon) Daniels; and his parents, Sam Daniels, and Paula (Herring) Daniels. He is survived by his sister, Mitzi (Daniels) Lafferty, his brother, Wayne Daniels (Terri), his step-mother, Billie (Govie) Daniels, stepdaughters, Pam (Dennis) Duncan and Debra (Rob) Gill and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mike served honorably in the Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Lance Corporal and served two tours in Vietnam. He participated in the Tet Offensive and received the National Defense Service medal, Overseas Bars (3), Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal and Good Conduct medal His experience in the Marines played a very important role in his life.

After his service in the Marine Corps, Mike joined the U.S. Army where he served as Drill Instructor until his retirement from the Army in 1984. He received the Superior Meritorious Award in 1978. In 1979 Staff Sergeant Daniels received the Soldiers Medal, the highest peacetime award given to a Soldier for acts of heroism, by placing his own life at risk while saving the life of others.

Mike also volunteered at the Veterans Hospital in Birmingham where he received honors for volunteering over 4,300 hours in 6 years as he continued to serve the military he loved.

He was a member of the Mensa Society.

Mike's service to his country was surpassed only by his service to his Lord and Savior. Mike grew up in Central Park Baptist Church and was a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church. Mike taught Sunday school class for years while at Green Valley Baptist Church. He participated in delivering Meals on Wheels. Mike was always in service to the Lord, and never missed an opportunity to share the love of Jesus Christ with others.
