Matilda DeLucas of Birmingham, passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2016, at the age of 92. She was born on Nov. 15, 1923 in Tunisia, to the late Stella and Laurent Farrugia, and is survived by her sister Grace Walters and brother Joe Farrugia. Matty graduated from Nottingham High School in Syracuse, New York, where she met her husband, Louis DeLucas. They were married June 14, 1947, and celebrated fifty-three years together before his death in September of 2000. Matty worked as a secretary for a brief time at Stanton Foundry in Syracuse. She then settled down as a homemaker. She loved cooking, reading, watching movies, and raising her family.
She is survived by her four children, Dr. James (Emma) DeLucas, Dr. Lawrence (Kathy) DeLucas, Jeffrey DeLucas (Teresa Parker), and Cindy DeLucas Deitsch (Jeff); six grandchildren, Larry DeLucas (Rachael), Alessandra DeLucas, Rob DeLucas (Erin), Katie Duke (Andrew), John DeLucas (Tiffany Waldorf), and Yana Deitsch; and two great-grandchildren, Samuel and Ryan DeLucas.
Visitation will be held at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150, Hoover, Alabama, on Tues, July 12, 2016, from 5-7 pm. Services will be held at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Hwy 119, Birmingham at 10 am on Wed, July 13, 2016. Graveside services will be held at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South on Hwy 150 following the services. Memorial gifts may be made in Matty's honor to Comfort Care Hospice, 245 Cahaba Valley Parkway #110, Pelham, AL 35124.
