Mary Catanzano Filippone, 87 of Pelham, cherished mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on May 2, 2019. Mary was born in Birmingham, AL on Christmas Eve 1931 to the late, Anthony S. Catanzano and Josephine C. Catanzano. Raised an only child Mary was determined to have a big family. She is survived by daughters, Yolanda "Randi" (Lee) Moore, Carol F. Minor (Tom Acker) of Pelham, AL, Christina F. Martin (Bryant) of Destin, FL; and a son, Anthony T. Filippone of Panama City Beach, FL. She is preceded in death by daughters, Angela Filippone and Paula Filippone Merrill. Known to all as Mama Mary, she is survived by 9 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren who adored her. She was married to the late, Fred T. (Flip) Filippone.
Mary was a graduate of St. Paul’s Catholic School and John Carroll Catholic High School. She retired twice from Infinity Insurance, formerly Stonewall Insurance. She was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoover, AL. She supported many charities including Boy’s Town, Catholic Charities, St. Jude’s Children’s hospital and Heart of the Nation church who televised the Catholic Mass every Sunday.
An outstanding Italian cook who loved serving her specialty dishes to family and friends. Her home was always open to old and new friends. She enjoyed dancing, bingo, playing cards and Western movies. Most of all she enjoyed her family whom she raised with love, generosity and a firm hand.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 11:30 am at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church located at 2061 Patton Chapel Road, Hoover, AL 35216. Visitation will be prior to mass starting at 10:00 am. Burial will be at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, 2701 John Hawkins Pkwy, Hoover, AL.
