Martrine Anderson

d. December 2, 2007

of Hoover, Alabama, passed away December 2, 2007 at the age of 92. Born in New Orleans and raised in New Iberia, Louisiana, Mrs. Anderson was a First Lieutenant and physician's assistant in the Women's Army Corps during WWII. During her military service, she met and fell in love with a handsome young officer, Axel W. Anderson, Jr. of Iola Kansas, before he left to fight in North Africa and Europe. Their bond remained strong and they married upon his return to serve at the Pentagon for the duration of the war. She later served as a licensed practical nurse, working in hospitals and doctors' offices in Michigan and South Carolina. In retirement, she and her husband were active in the local chapters of AARP and Union Carbide retirees, and in volunteering at Catholic Charities and the Veterans Administration Hospital. Mr. Anderson was recently deceased. She was known as a humble and gracious humanitarian whose heart was always open to anyone with a need, and a devout Catholic who spent much time in prayer over the needs of friends, family and countless others she never met. She was an intelligent woman who loved to laugh and had a real zest and gladness in living. She and her husband traveled extensively and, though she lived her final years far from family, she made friends wherever she went. Mrs. Anderson is survived by her two sons, Axel W. Anderson III of Manhattan, NY, and Mark R. (Jeannette) Anderson; and grandchildren Arienne, Andy, Rachel, Krysta, and Jessica. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 6th from10:30 to 11 am at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150, in Hoover, AL, followed by a chapel service at 11 am. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mrs. Anderson's name to Catholic Charities.
