Martha Shannon

Martha Jane Harris Shannon, a resident of Dothan, AL, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Thursday October 6, 2022, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s. She was 89.

Graveside services are at 11:00 am on Monday, October 10, 2022, at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South, 2701 John Hawkins Pkwy, Hoover, AL, 35244. The Reverend Bob Sanders is officiating. The family will receive friends and family from 10:00 am to 10:45 am prior to service time at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant United Methodist Church, 3610 West Main Street, Dothan, AL, 36305, or The Parkinson’s Association of Alabama at 837 Aberlady Place, Birmingham, AL, 35242.

Martha Jane was born in Selma, but raised in Montgomery. She graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1951 and attended Huntingdon College. In 1953 she married Don and had a faithful loving marriage for 69 years. In 1965 the family moved to Bluff Park, now Hoover, where they raised their family until moving to Dothan in 2014.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John Elmore Harris and Annabelle McElroy Harris; her sister, Nell Harris Williams; and brothers, Ellis Harris and Joe Ed Harris.

She is survived by her loving husband Donald G. Shannon; daughters Cathy Harrison (Don) and Lynne VandeLune (Robert) and son Donald G. Shannon Jr. (Allison); grandchildren Guy VandeLune, Amy Howell (Brent), Ryan Shannon (Natalie), Cameron Shannon (Brianna), Will Shannon, Courtney Cannon (Robert), Susanne Estes (Scott), Don Harrison III (Ginny) and her great-grandchildren Harris and Ellis Anne Howell, Archie Shannon, Mary Charlotte and Warren Cannon, Harrison and Anna Grace Estes, and Caroline, Payne and Ann Marie Harrison.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to her loving caregiver, Cindy Moss, who faithfully cared for her for many years. A very special thank you also to Day Spring Hospice and Dr. Paola Bass for their love, care, and concern for our sweet mother.
