Martha Sue Mahaffey passed away at her home on October 31, 2016 after a brief illness. She was 85. Born in Arkadelphia, Martha was a loving wife and mother who worked tirelessly over the years in the several churches her husband pastored. (Vance Baptist, Randolph Baptist, Ryan Baptist and Dogwood Grove Baptist). She is preceded in death by her parents, Sparks P. Freeman and Willie Caroline Freeman, and her sister, Letha Mae Boren.
She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Robert E. Mahaffey; her daughter, Anita McCroskey (Steve) of Lake View; her son, Keith Mahaffey (Ann) of Vance; her sister, Imogene Minor of Gardendale; her brother, Sparks Freeman (Mavoline) of Gardendale. She was the proud grandmother of Dr. Bryant Mahaffey (Kristin) of Decatur and Cassandra Nelson (Clay) of Vance. She enjoyed her niece Nelda Freeman of Locust Fork (Nelda's daughters, Vicki and Tracie), and niece Melissa Jett (Billy) of Chelsea, and her nephews, Sparks Freeman, Jr. of Trussville and Hal Minor (Robin) of Bessemer.
Her passion was gardening, sewing, cooking, Alabama football and Braves baseball.
Robert and the family are especially grateful to the members of Dogwood Grove Baptist Church for their loving support over the years, as well as the many wonderful nurses and techs with Amedisys Home Care and Hospice.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Dogwood Grove Baptist Church in Montevallo. The funeral service will be on November 3, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the church with Rev. Todd Burr officiating.
