Margaret "Margie" Tegtmeyer Cohen, 85, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2023, in Birmingham Alabama. Margie is survived by her daughters Midge Berardi (Jim) and Bobbi Stephenson (Randy) and her six grandchildren, who affectionally called her "Marget", Jacki Berardi, Tina Berardi, Nicole Berardi, Jennifer Berardi, Joey Hart (Mary), and Tommy Hart, and a large extended family including many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Margie is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Robert "Bob" Cohen, who passed away in 2020.
Margie was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin to Gamber and Margaret (Brown) Tegtmeyer on October 31, 1937. She had two older brothers Gamber and John and a younger sister, Charlotte, who she now joins in peace. Margie attended Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois, where she earned her bachelor's degree in English. She was a sister of Chi Omega and president, as well as president of the Panhellenic Council. It was also where she met the love of her life, Bob. They were married in Milwaukee on September 3, 1960.
Margie and Bob lived in Highland Park, Illinois for 30 years, where she had her two daughters. Margie was involved with the Highland Park Women's Club and served many years in session at Highland Park Presbyterian Church. Margie also worked as the school librarian for 18 years at Wayne Thomas School in Highland Park, educating children and making lifelong friends. She and Bob took a leap of faith and moved to Oil City, Pennsylvania for a year, in order for Bob to pursue a new venture with Quaker State Oil. The company then moved them to Irving, Texas, where they lived for 21 years. Margie made many new friends and became involved with Friends of the Library and the Las Colinas Women's Association. She also took up a new hobby; painting. She truly enjoyed her life there. Their next move was to Hoover, Alabama to be close to family. She was an active member of the Church at Ross Bridge and a beloved neighbor of the Sawyer Trail community.
Since she was born on Halloween, the family would often joke about her annual Halloween trip on her broomstick flying across the moon. We will be looking for her affectionately with hopes that this will be her best flight yet.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at 11:00 am at Church at Ross Bridge, 2101 Grand Avenue Hoover Alabama 35226. Her private burial will be in Milwaukee followed by a celebration in Highland Park in November. Date and time TBD. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Church at Ross Bridge http://www.rossbridge.church/
