Luther Murphy

Mr. Luther C. Murphy, of Hoover, AL, went to be with the Lord and his wife, Sunday, February 8, 2015, at the age of 83. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather and uncle. He was born in New Hope, MS and raised in Belgreen, AL. After high school, he joined the US Air Force and served his country for 3 years. Upon returning home, he attended Auburn University (API) where he graduated in 1956 with a B.S. degree in Accounting. He started at US Steel before moving on to US Pipe and retired from Southeastern Bolt & Screw after 25 years. Luther was faithful Christian in his daily walk and service through Bluff Park United Methodist Church for nearly 60 years. He treasured his friends in the Opportunity Class. He was a constant fan in the Auburn football stands beginning in the early 1960's. He was a member of Vestavia Country Club for 40 years where he enjoyed golfing, exercising and fellowship with friends. He introduced his family to the lake life with fishing and water skiing and that tradition continues.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Wood Murphy, his parents, Evans H. Murphy and Tina A. Murphy, brothers, Evan Murphy and Garlon Murphy, and sisters, Bobbie Nell Murphy and Nora Ann Murphy.
He is survived by a son, Charles Murphy (Becky) of Houston, TX, daughters, Linda Marie Viljamaa (Panu Pekka) of New York City, NY, Lisa Avant Duarte (John) of Homewood, AL, grandchildren, Shelby Avant, Savannah Avant, Lauren Duarte and Paul Duarte, brother, William Murphy (Emma), nieces, Joyce Ponder, Hazel Morrison and Mary Glover and nephew, Wayne Murphy.
The family deeply appreciates the support and compassionate care of Hope Hospice including David, Beth and JJ, and especially his care companion, Michelle.
The family will receive friends Thursday, February 12, 2015, from 1-2 PM at Bluff Park United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2 PM at the church with Rev. Tom Duley and Rev. Mike Holly officiating. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Bluff Park United Methodist Church - Missions.
