Lura Elizabeth Barnett, affectionately known to most as Memama, age 99, of Birmingham, AL passed away on January 2, 2020. Mrs. Barnett was born in Vincent, AL to Joe Curtis Crawford and Viola White Crawford on August 24, 1920. She was one of the original “Rosie the Riveters” during World War 2 and also worked as a seamstress for over 50 years.
Mrs. Barnett is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Lorene Melton; her brothers, Monroe Crawford and George Gordon Crawford; her oldest daughter, Elizabeth Ann Green; her three grandsons, Rex Green, Rodney Green and Reagan Green; and her nephew, Billy Joe Crawford.
Mrs. Barnett is survived by her daughters Nancy Rowell (Ron) of Vestavia, AL, and Gayle Thomas (Robert) of Pelham, AL; her brother Bill Crawford (Deloris) of Centre, AL; her Grandchildren and Great-grandchildren Chris Rowell (Beth, Jake, Sadie) of Homewood, AL, Lori Ennis (J.T., Pearl, Eloise) of Vestavia, AL, Samantha Reed (Brian, Liam, Evan, Elliot) of Richmond, VA, and Robert Thomas, II of Pelham, AL; her nephew Roy Crawford (Vicki) of Gadsden, AL; and her very dear friends Vivianna and Carlos Rodriguez of Bessemer, AL.
Visitation will be from 10:00-11:30, Monday, January 6th with a graveside service immediately following at Currie Jefferson Funeral Home (2701 John Hawkins Parkway (Hwy 150), Hoover, 35244).
The family of Mrs. Barnett wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Trinette Peterson, Calvin Haire and Veronica Clark as well as to all the Comfort Care Hospice nurses.
