Lucky Lewis Toole, age 74, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 11, 2018, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by loved ones. He was a 1962 graduate of Banks High School. As a young teen, he was involved with the Civil Air Patrol, learning to fly at age 15 and eventually becoming Commander of the Bessemer Composite Squadron. After serving in the U.S. Army, Lewis received a B.S. in Political Science from the University of Alabama and began a career as a probation officer with Jefferson County, where he retired. His lifelong involvement in community and civic pursuits included Navy MARS and Shades Valley Masonic Lodge #829 where he was Past Master. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pat C. and Paula Toole; and siblings, Pat L. Toole and Letitia Howard.
Lewis is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; her children, Bill Woodson (Lynn), Melissa Hoercher (Loren), John Woodson (Kim) and Susan Saab (Andy); brother, Terry Toole; sister, Cathy Davis (Ricky); and many loving grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 14, 2018, from 10-11 AM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home. The service will begin at 11 AM in the chapel with Dr. Bill Woodson officiating. The burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
