Lois Crumpton Avery, of Shelby, AL, passed away on January 21, 2017, at the age of 89. Born in Jemison, AL, on April 13, 1927, she was the daughter of Monroe and Myrtle Crumpton. Shortly after marrying, Lois and Sam moved to Chicago, IL, before settling in Bessemer, AL, to raise their four children. Later, they both retired to Shelby, AL, on the beautiful Lay Lake. Lois was an active member of the Hoover Senior Center, Sophisticates, Continental Dance Club, Lamp Lighters, Amidy Club, and the Second Baptist Church of Bessemer. Lois was known for her fun-loving spirit and a strong devotion to her savior, Jesus Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Samuel P. Avery; her eldest son, Sammy Marshall Avery; and sisters, Faye Crumpton Cromer and Gloria Crumpton Howard.
Lois is survived by her daughters, Sarah Merita Judson (Roger) of Ann Arbor and Samra Meloneysa Hubbard (Daniel) of Vestavia Hills; son, Smiddie Mitchell Avery (Tammy) of Bessemer; six grandchildren, Wendy Williamson, Wes Williamson (Jennifer), Madelline Hubbard, Mackinnley Hubbard, Samuel Avery, and Sarah Wynne Avery; and four great-grandchildren, Payton Williamson, Dominick Williamson, Jillian Williamson, and Mia Williamson; sisters, Lorene Wiczorek and Joy Lowery; brother, Thomas Crumpton; and many family members and friends, especially the special family at the Hoover Senior Center.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, from 12-1 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home with the service to follow in the Chapel.
