Lawton Eugene “Gene” Ogletree, 65, of Chelsea, Alabama, passed away late Monday afternoon July 3, 2017, surrounded by his loving wife, daughters, and son-in-law. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, his devoted parents raised Gene in a loving home where they honored the Lord. Gene had a big heart for people, always welcoming, sharing Jesus, and encouraging others. With his dry sense of humor and compassionate heart, Gene never met a stranger and was blessed with many wonderful “true” friends. His work was marked by honesty and integrity throughout his career including his years in the banking industry at Secor (now Regions) Bank, Southern Linc, and Jack Henry Associates. He had an entrepreneurial spirit, opening his own business, Cellulink, one of the largest cellular phone agents for several years, and most recently, the Ogletree Consulting Group. But most importantly, Gene was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 26 wonderful years of marriage, Cathy Gettys Ogletree; two daughters, Ashlei Ogletree Dorough (Matthew Earl) and Kayla Catharine Ogletree both of Chelsea, Alabama; and he was also a proud grandfather, affectionately called Poppie by his three grandchildren, Matthew Cade Dorough, Colton Layne Dorough, and Addisyn Mae Dorough. Gene is preceded in death by his father, Reverand Ottis Lawton Ogletree, and survived by his mother, Grace Kilgo Ogletree. He is also survived by his three sisters, Cecelia Pearce and Cheryl Hardin, both of Gardendale, Alabama, and Connie Hill of Bradford, Alabama; and many other relatives and friends including the "Gettys" family that he loved as his own. He will also be greatly missed by his little rescue dog Lucy, whom he affectionately called "rag tag throw away." Gene is dearly missed by his loved ones, who rejoice in the truth that he is now at peace with Jesus Christ in heaven.
The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2017, with funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. at North Shelby Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Interment will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South in Hoover, Alabama.
The Ogletree family would also like to express their sincere gratitude to the physicians and staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital for their care and support.
