Kelley Mayo

February 11, 1928 — April 5, 2015

Kelley Lee Mayo, 87, of Shannon, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015. Born in Mississippi, Mr. Mayo was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He began his service in 1946 as a member of the US Army Air Corps and transferred to the US Air Force when it was originally formed. He worked for more than thirty years at the US Steel plant in Birmingham. He kept himself busy after retirement by driving dump trucks for Magic City Trucking, volunteering at the Shannon Volunteer Fire Department and growing vegetables in his garden. He was well-known throughout his community for his lengthy stories and his willingness to help his many friends in times of need. In earlier years, he was an avid hunter and enjoyed being outdoors his entire life. He enjoyed his truck and tractors and took every opportunity he had to visit “the farm” in Chilton County. He always had a smile on his face and loved to walk his visitors to their cars to give them one final story and a wave as they left.
A loving family man, Mr. Mayo is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn Mayo, their children; Virginia (Richard) Bonds, Albert (Ann) Mayo, Kathy Mayo, and Sharon (Garry) Tucker; two granddaughters, Melissa Mayo and Katie Abney; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is also missed by his devoted canine companion, Jozy, who frequently rode along with him on his adventures.
The family will welcome visitors at Currie- Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover on Tuesday, April 7 from 6-8 pm. Funeral and burial services will be held at Jefferson Memorial Gardens South on Wednesday, April 8 at 1 pm. Elder Wayne Crocker, of Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church where Mr. Mayo attended worship services, will preside.
