Julitt "Judy" Smith Nelson, of Birmingham, AL, passed on Monday, January 15, 2018. She is at peace with our Lord and Heavenly Father. Judy was a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, and friend. She thoroughly enjoyed the company of her many dear friends and the special fellowship shared during her ladies’ weekly Bible studies and luncheons. She was a member of the 20th Century Study Club. Judy was an active member of Third Presbyterian Church, and for many years she was a dedicated Core Leader at Community Bible Study. Judy loved to cook and derived great joy from lavishing those she loved with her cooking.

Judy was born in Cullman, AL to Eugene Smith and Mable Murphree Smith, both of whom predeceased her in death. She is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years, Samuel Harrison Nelson. On January 13, 2018, just 2 days before her passing, Judy and Sam celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. Judy is survived by her daughters, Jill Nelson of Birmingham, AL and Kristi (Ryan) LeBlanc of New Orleans, LA; sister, Margaret (Johnny) Naish; brothers, Aubrey (Charlotte) Smith, and Jimmy (Jan) Smith. Judy is also survived by 7 beloved grandchildren who will miss her greatly, Emily Owen Nelson Mendelsohn, Samuel Parkman Nelson Mendelsohn, Fields Summerour Nelson Mendelsohn, Harrison Ryan LeBlanc, Mary-Reynolds Jill LeBlanc, Hope Nelson LeBlanc, and John Littleton LeBlanc; as well as many adored nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dr. Allen Yeilding for his compassionate and thoughtful care. They are also very grateful for the kindness and wonderful care that Alicia Britton gave to Judy in her last days.

A memorial service will be conducted by Dr. Richard Trucks, Reverend Hunter Twitty, and Dr. William G. Hay at Third Presbyterian Church, 617 22nd Street South, Birmingham, Alabama 35233 at 11 o’clock on Friday, January 19, 2018. A visitation will precede the service at 10 o’clock. A private burial will follow the service.
