Juanita Colbert

Juanita H. Colbert, age 88, of Hoover, AL, peacefully passed away in the evening of March 5, 2018.

She grew up on Avenue J in Ensley and went to Bush Grammar school and Ensley High school where she was a member of the national honor society in 1946. She was a long time member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, Homewood, AL, and a former member of Ensley Baptist Church. During her career she was an Executive Secretary to Hall Thompson at Thompson Tractor, a legal assistant at Balch & Bingham, and a legal assistant to a member of the US Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC. Juanita was also a proud member and President in 1983 of Executive Women International, Birmingham Chapter also serving as VP 1982, Director at Large 1977, Ways and Means Director 1976 and Treasurer 1974. She loved to dance, travel, sit on the beach in Gulf Shores and play board games at the Heardmont Senior Center. At Dawson, Juanita volunteered for three years in Dr. Fenton's Office and assisted with the Lords Supper Committee. She donated to numerous charities and was proud to be a Democrat. Juanita was a loving, generous and caring aunt and mother. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Joan (Jodie) Hesselbacher, and her daughter-in-law, Caroline M. Beckers.

Juanita is survived by her two sons, Stephen “Steve” Alan Beckers, and James Randall “Randy” Beckers; and a plethora of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Friday, March 9, 2018, from 1-2 PM at Curie-Jefferson Funeral Home, 2701 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover. Following in the Chapel at 2 PM will be a Service to honor Juanita’s life.

Juanita requested, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Foundation Fighting Blindness (7168 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 100 Columbia, MD 21046), the Arthritis Foundation (500 Office Park Drive Suite 200 Birmingham, Alabama 35223), or the Women's Missionary Union (100 Missionary Ridge P.O. Box 830010 Birmingham, AL 35283).

We will all miss her.
