Johnny Smalley

Johnny Tucker Smalley, of Hoover, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at the age of 71. He was born in Thomasville, Georgia. Johnny attended Fairview Grammar School and Ensley High School, graduating in 1963. He was a 1971 graduate of the University of Alabama, having earned a degree in civil engineering, and he worked for the Alabama Highway Department for 15 years and became a Professional Engineer in 1974. Meanwhile, Johnny served our country in the Alabama National Guard/Army. Mr. Smalley owned, managed, and maintained rental properties for more than 3 decades. Additionally, Johnny began applying his engineering skills and knowledge of residential housing, working as a structural engineer, performing foundation inspections with his son Jonathan. He was a member of the Birmingham Street Rod Association, the Tree Trimmers Ornament Club, and the Alabama Woodworkers Guild. Johnny was president of the PTA at Hueytown Elementary, Pittman Middle School, and Hueytown High School while Jonathan attended those schools. Those who met him and worked with him were positively influenced by their association with him. He was a member of the Hueytown Church of Christ for 36 years. He was affectionately known to his grandchildren as "Johnny Pop."

He is preceded in death by his parents, M.E.and Jessie Mae Smalley. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Claudia Smalley; his son, Jonathan Smalley (Haley); 2 grandchildren, Grayton and Chandler Smalley; his sister, Becky Keith (Jim); and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 - 11:00, Saturday, October 15, 2016, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150 in Hoover. Funeral will follow at 11 AM in the chapel, Buc Chumbley officiating. Entombment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Sacred Selections, 1608 Manasco Circle, Folsom, CA 95630.
