of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2009 in Norfolk, VA at the age of 88. John was born and raised in Cullman, AL, attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and St. Bernard High School. He served in World World II as Master Sergeant Army Air Corps. He was employed by Jefferson County Health Department for 32 years as a Health Inspector. After retiring, he owned & operated Big John’s BBQ Restaurant in Birmingham for 8 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Stella Robinson Mauter and his parents, Teresa Popp Mauter and Jacob T. Mauter. He is survived by daughter, Pat Crank and George Joyner from Virginia Beach, VA; son and daughter in law, Mike & Sherri Mauter of Birmingham; two grandsons, Stephen & Missy Perry and their beautiful daughter, Ainsley Elizabeth Perry of Ft Lauderdale, FL and Brian Perry of San Diego, CA; and two brothers, Joe Mauter of Florence, AL and Ed Mauter of Hoover, AL. For most of his life, gardening was one of John’s greatest pleasures. He enjoyed sharing his bounty with friends and neighbors. John was a friend to many and a lifetime member of the Concordia Club. John and Stella were founding members of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. Special appreciation to Bernice Henderson at Our Lady of the Valley, who faithfully visited John every Tuesday to bring communion. The family will receive friends on Sunday, 3/1/09 from 5PM to 8PM, with Rosary at 7PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home. Mr. Mauter will lie in state Monday, 3/2/09, from 10:15-11 AM at Our Lady of the Valley, 5514 Double Oak Lane with Funeral Mass to follow at 11 AM. Entombment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens South following funeral.
