John Mauk

Mr. John Wayne Mauk, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on July 28, 2013. He was born on January 20, 1939 in Birmingham to Dorris Henry and Claude H. Mauk. He graduated from Phillips High School, attended the University of Alabama where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, and was a graduate of Georgia State University. He worked as an actuary for Volunteer Life Insurance Company, Chattanooga, TN. In 1968 he changed careers and became general manager of the Ramada Inn, Panama City, FL., Ramada Inn, Bessemer, AL., the Daniel Boone Hotel, Charleston, WV., and the Ramada Inn, Prattville, AL. In 1995 he joined his family's advertising business where he remained as CEO until his death. He is survived by his wife of 48 years Barrie Shell Mauk, children Mandy Calvert (Adam), Missy Heard (Marc) and JJ (Johni Lowe), grandchildren Jon Parker and Sam Calvert, Claudia and Kayleigh Heard, Jordin, Bailey, Jon Claude and Brooks Mauk. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, July 31, at 6:00 PM at Currie Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, Hoover, AL. Family will receive friends from 4-6 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to kidney cancer research at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. Donors may specify the kidney cancer designation on their check or in a note accompanying the donation.
