Mrs. Jessie Mae Oakes, age 89, passed away April 6, 2013. Jessie worked at Pizitz Downtown for many years where she sold cosmetics. She was sent to a number of cosmetic schools in Birmingham and Atlanta. She became accomplished in the field and was asked many times to assist with the Miss Alabama contestants. She left Pizitz for a cosmetic position at Gary Drug in Mountain Brook where she remained until her retirement. After retiring she did volunteer work at her church, Bluff Park Baptist, and at Brookwood Hospital. She loved listening to and singing along with old gospel songs, attending all church functions and visiting with relatives. She is preceded in death by her husband: George W. Oakes, her brothers: Arnold Green, Hillard Green and John Green; her sisters: Mildred Jackson and Inez Jackson. She is survived by her son: H. Wayne Potter; Daughter-in-law: Vickie H. Potter; Grandson: Ryan W. Potter; Granddaughter: Robin P. Cavanaugh; Great Grand Children: Christopher M. Cavanaugh, Cheyenne M. Cavanaugh and Cambrie M. Cavanaugh. All surviving immediate family reside in Spring, Texas. She has numerous nieces and nephews in the Birmingham area. Jessie was a very loving person. She especially loved God, her church and her family. She will be missed. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 10, 2013, from 1-2 PM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow with Pastor Tony Barber officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to her church: Bluff Park Baptist, 2211 McGwier Drive, Hoover, AL 35226.
