Jesse Milton Wright, Jr., age 88, of Hoover, AL, born July 1, 1929, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Milton Wright and Mary Estelle (Jackie) Allums Wright Springer; his wife of 64 years, Carolyn Ruth Roberts Wright; his brother, Joe Eugene Wright; his son, Gary Milton Wright; and a granddaughter, Ashley Wright Lumpkin (Bill).
Milton was survived by his two children, Randy Terrell Wright (Sally) of Sanford, NC, and Lisa Wright Wilson (Pete) of Madison, MS; eleven grandchildren, Christian Alexander Wright of Dallas, TX, Gary Seth Wright (Krysee) of Caddo, AL and Shelby Wright Turner (Brad) of Hoover, AL; William Terrell Wright and Charles Edward Wright of NC; Daniel Cooper Wilson (Meagan), Benjamin Wright Wilson (Elizabeth), Matthew Robert Wilson, Joseph David Wilson (Alyssa), Emily Jane Wilson and Anna Caroline Wilson, all of MS; twelve great-grandchildren, Autumn, Hannah, Abby, Heidi, Madeline, Abel, Isabella, Lillian, Avett, Ayla, Samuel and David.
Milton, (a.k.a. Monk) was a 1947 graduate of West End High School, where he excelled as a pitcher for the baseball team. Following graduation, he began working for South Central Bell as a lineman and married his high school sweetheart. He served in the Naval Air Force Reserve from 1951 – 1965 at air stations in Birmingham and Atlanta. He graduated from Samford University in May 1966 after attending night classes for 8 years. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he was promoted to management at the phone company. He was a member of several service-oriented clubs including the Telephone Pioneers and the Optimist Club where he served as VP and President. He retired in 1987 after 40 years of service.
After retiring, Milton enjoyed dividing his time between his home in Hoover and his mountain home in the Carolina Smoky Mountains. His interests included genealogy, travelling, dancing, socializing and Alabama football. He loved his twice-a-year Panama City Beach reunions with his Navy buddies and even created a poster board listing all the attendees for 30 years. Milton cherished his many friends and his family. He was the beloved patriarch of a very large extended family, and was generous, loving and kind to all. He will be missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends Saturday, January 20, 2018, from 10-11 AM at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home and the service will follow in the Chapel at 11 AM. Burial will be at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South.
