ROE, JEAN H., of Birmingham, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2009, at the age of 71. She graduated from the Birmingham College of Allied Health and was employed at Parkside Rehabilitation Treatment Center as a substance abuse technician, working with women. She also worked at UAB in the Neuro-intensive Care Unit as a unit secretary. Jean overcame many difficulties and hardships in her life, one of which was alcoholism. She went on to help many others learn to stay sober one day at a time. She counseled rape victims, bringing help and healing to them. Jean was instrumental in changing the laws regarding safety in gated and guarded communities for the State of Alabama. She learned the power of forgiveness, which brought restoration to her own life, her family, and to the lives of those she counseled. Jean loved wildflowers and helped establish the Nature Trail at Shades Mountain Elementary School. She was a lover of Jesus and a lover of people. Her life was a testimony of Victory. We will miss her. She is survived by her daughter, Marsha Costello (Pat) of Hoover; three sons, Terry Roe (Carol) of Houston, TX, John Roe (Kathleen) of Atlanta, GA, and Ken Roe (Pia) of Houston, TX; and six grandchildren, Kyrsten Fortner, Erin, Clayton, and Jacob Costello, and David and Stephanie Roe. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, April 16, 2009, at Currie Jefferson Funeral Home on Hwy 150 in Hoover.
