Janice Louise Ritchey Steinberg, 96, went to be with the Lord on September 22, 2017, in Birmingham, Alabama. With her family by her side, she passed away peacefully. Janice was born in Dubois, Pennsylvania on September 23, 1920 and called Pennsylvania her home until relocating to Huntsville, Alabama and then to Birmingham.
In her younger years, Janice and her brother Jake were professional tap dancers. She was a skilled beautician and owned her own beauty shop. She married Leonard Steinberg and raised four children. During their 36 years of marriage, they enjoyed getting together with friends to play bridge, participate in boating related activities and dabble in square dancing. Her family was always the Number 1 priority in her life.
Janice had a true love of God. Mom was a loving and giving person, always helping others, making them feel loved and remembering their special occasions. She would enjoy endless hours playing canasta (aka, "Canasta Queen"), gardening and spending time with her family. In recent years, Janice followed Alabama football and became an avid fan. She was loved and adored by many who adopted her as their "Mom."
Janice is predeceased by her husband, Leonard Steinberg; parents, Forrest and Mary Louise Ritchey; brother, Jake Ritchey; sister, Sandra Benson; grandson, Andrew Sweeney; and great-daughter, Roisin Gholson.
Survivors include son, Leonard Steinberg of San Francisco, California; daughters, Gwendolyn McLeod (Bruce) of Birmingham, Susan Malecki (Richard) of Woodstock, Georgia, and Cynthia Steinberg of Birmingham; grandchildren, Tara Weilbacher, Nathan Sweeney, Kristin Gholson, Erica Sweeney, Brian Sweeney, Michael Malecki and Alexandra Steinberg; 8 great grandchildren; sister, Beverly Weber; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, 2701 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover, Alabama. Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. at Valhalla Memory Gardens in Huntsville, Alabama.
