Janice Powell

February 12, 1949 — February 4, 2015

Mrs. Janice Wiley Powell gained her angel wings on February 4th, 2015 at home with her family. Janice was born February 12, 1949 in Toccoa, Georgia to Maurice and Reba Wiley. She grew up in Toccoa, Georgia and graduated from Shorter College with a BA in Education. Upon graduation she moved to Atlanta, Georgia to begin teaching and there met the love of her life, Don. Within just a few years of marriage they moved to Birmingham, Alabama where she lived the rest of her life. Their two daughters Jennifer and Kristi were born and raised in Birmingham with the exception of the three years they lived in Saudi Arabia. Janice had a love for children of all ages. She taught Kindergarten for 16 years at Southminster Day School where she instilled her enthusiasm for life in the hearts of all she taught. Having raised two girls she was also led to inspire young girls. For over 20 years she was a Miss Alabama pageant mom where she was able to share her faith and amazing strength with hundreds of girls. She was also a charter board member of The Auxiliary of Big Oak Ranch and spent endless hours ensuring these children received not only what they needed, but also what they wanted. Janice was also active with the Shades Mountain Junior Women's Club and Hoover Service Club. Janice loved to give a party full of Southern charm complete with flowers and table decor. She also loved to shop and was frequently seen at Parisian, Chico's and TJMaxx and was always up for an Atlanta market trip. She was a beloved grandmother (Decee) who taught them to look for the fun in life, enjoy candy at all times and most of all share God's love with others. Janice is survived by her husband James "Don" Powell. Her daughter, Jennifer Powell Plowden and her husband Derek. Her daughter, Kristi Powell Blythe and her husband Casey. Her four grandchildren, Ashton Wynn Plowden, Bennett Wiley Plowden, Lane Andrew Blythe and Anne Baker Blythe. Also, a multitude of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Maurice Wiley, mother, Reba Wiley Caldwell and stepfather James Caldwell and sister Brenda Wiley Belmont. The Celebration of Life service will be held at Mountain Chapel United Methodist Church on February 8, 2015 at 2:00. Pastor Tom Parrish will be officiating.
